High School Choir

Dr. Julie Yu, OKC University

Dr. Julie Yu (She/Her/Hers) is Professor of Music and Director of Choral Studies at the Wanda L. Bass School of Music at Oklahoma City University and the Artistic Director of Canterbury Voices.

She holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the University of Central Oklahoma, a Master of Music in Choral Conducting from Oklahoma State University, and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting from the University of North Texas. Before joining OCU and Canterbury Voices, she taught at Norman North High School in Oklahoma, San José State University, and Kansas State University.

She has given presentations and conducted, and/or her choirs have performed for state and regional conferences of the American Choral Directors Association, National Association for Music Education, DoDEA Europe Honors Music Festival, and the European Music Educators Association. She is a past president of the Southwestern Region of the American Choral Directors Association and served as an International Conducting Exchange Fellow to Kenya. She currently serves on the board of the Oklahoma Music Educators Association as Vice President for Higher Education and Advisor for Collegiate OkMEA.

Farren Mayfield, NSU Collaborative Pianist

Farren has served as Collaborative Pianist at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma since 2009. Throughout the year Farren collaborates with numerous faculty, guest artists as well as working with Opera & Musical Theatre, University Singers, and University Chorus.  He has premiered and frequently performs works by living composers and is a multi-genre composer himself.  Since 2009, Farren has played in and directed the River City Players band, a summer long rock and country review show.

Farren also leads, and plays mandolin/bouzouki in a Tahlequah group called Bear Creek Troupe. Their focus is Celtic dance music, and ballads.  Additionally, he plays mandolin in the Tahlequah Mandophonics; a mandolin octet.  For over ten years he been part of the ‘mini-but-mighty’ orchestra for the Cherokee Musical: “Nanyehi”, by Becky Hobbs. Farren’s degrees include a B.A. in Education from Northeastern State University (summa cum laude,) and an M.M. in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Oklahoma.   He spends his extra time tending to a herd of 16 American Miniature Horses and a productive home garden.  Mr. Mayfield is a proud citizen of the Cherokee Nation.
